Arts Fartsy

As usual, the judges of the Fine Arts display and I have some serious differences on what is and is not quality art. Being such a subjective thing, I gave up this year trying to understand their minds and reasoning and instead focused on patterns. What patterns did all the winning photos and art pieces have in common? According to what I determined, the judges of the fine arts make their determinations and awards based on detail. The more detail, the more work that went into a project, the more it seems the artist is likely to win a ribbon.

This years’ Best of Show is just that: A massive collage combining a variety of art skills. Yes, it is indeed an interesting piece and it did take a lot of work. I disagree as usual, however, that the designation of ‘Best of Show’ should apply.

To me, quality in art is the message or statement or provocation of emotion generated by the piece. Even the post modernistic pieces can still force a statement or release of emotion.

The opposite is true as well. At times, the simplicity of a piece can make the loudest and most profound statement. Here, is what I consider to have been the Best of Show. It is raw and pure simplicity; black and white and a single obvious object. It presents a clash of emotions; a compromise of strength and gentility and a demonstration that males can have a nurturing heart. This piece is a gift to Fairgoers. (My apologies for the glare in the photo).

Maybe next year, they will frame my Lawyer shirt. That would indeed be Art and the Best of Show.
