Day of Defeat

By Mark David Blum, Esq.

Yesterday, I got beat from one end of the day to the other. I sat on hard metal backless seats to see the Syracuse Orange get crushed by their own ineptitude on offense. Then, the Yankees went down 3 games to 1. To cap off a perfect losing day, despite a miraculous attempt at a comeback, the Mets swept the Dodgers and their ace pitcher.

It was supposed to be a day that turned everything around. The Syracuse Orange football team found itself with a record of 2-2; doubling last year’s win record. After a near win over Iowa, hopes were high that Pitt would go down hard. Yet, after two years now, it appears that the new Carrier Dome infield has turned the Hill into a Kennedy-esque ‘Grassy Knoll’ for Orange football.

Many years have passed since I last visited the Carrier Dome and now I remember why. In fact, if memory serves, the last time I saw a football game at the Dome, the Mrs. was 97 months pregnant and we were smashed in the student section behind the goal post for the Miami Syracuse season closer. Gino Toretta was almost stopped by Chris Gedney and Marvin Graves treated us to some vomit on the sidelines. It was so crowded on those metal benches that every time we stood up to cheer, our seats disappeared when we tried to sit down again. Despite the orgasmic frenzy of the game, we swore we would not come back to the Dome because of the lack of comfort. Yesterday was a stark reminder to not do that again. Unfortunately, I still have tickets for a couple more games, so there is more pain and suffering to come. At $326.00 each, at least Dome Dogs and a Beer make bearable some of the pain.

How the Detroit Tigers beat the crap out of the Yankees, I will never know. Personally, I have no affection for the Yankees and only mildly cheer for them because I live for a Dodgers / Yankees World Series. The Mrs. however, is a rabid Yankee fan and did not miss a single inning this season. As I was massaging some blood back into my buttocks from the Carrier Dome, I got to watch one Bomber after another go down in strikes.

Before the first pitch was even thrown, I knew the Dodgers were out of the series. No Wild Card team has ever won the World Series and despite their technical status as the NL Wild Card team, the Dodgers really looked good as the season wound down. But, when the Mets went up two games to nada and then four runs off of Maddux, it was time to change the channel, turn over and call it a day.

The only real question I have left is whether I should get my hopes up that Donovan McNabb overruns Terrell Owens. Nobody hates the Dallas Cowboys more than a born and bred Los Angeleian. The Cowboys are natural enemies of what was once the LA Rams, what was once the LA Raiders, and the forever San Francisco 49ers. Hence, anytime I can see a beatdown on the Cowboys, I am there. Given my luck in picking winners in sports this weekend, perhaps you all should bet against the Eagles.
